Imagine a city with a large-scale infrastructure with unlimited data sources on energy consumption, waste, mobility, health-care and education, made possible by technologies such as sensor webs, open databases and ubiquitous information access. This connects people with their environment and creates a more efficient and optimal relationship between available resources, technology and community services. This is a city that creates new possibilities.
The question is: do these smart cities need smart citizens? Allowing citizens to become active in the process of city design is a key to success of a smart city. Citizens who live and work in these cities must be integral to the implementation process as well. A developing city will turn into a successfully developed city when its citizens upgrade themselves. A smart city is not about technology and has never been. It is about the personal experience of its residents. It is a fact that smart citizens are an essential part of smart cities, without which the entire mechanism would not be able to properly function and develop further.
It is time to ask yourself a question: if your city becomes a smart city with perfect infrastructure and advanced technology, will it turn you into a smart citizen? It is not just about your qualifications or level of education, but also interaction, integration and openness to the outside world.
