1) What do you think will the next big change in the BCM within the span of next 5 years?
I don’t foresee any major changes happening to the standard anytime soon, however, the uptake of organization will increase due to the financial constraints in the region pushing organizations to be prepared for unstable market place.
2) Can you describe some guidelines for setting policies and procedures to ensure business continuity?
Organizations should consider implementing the basics standards like ISO9001 (Quality Management System), ISO14001 (Environment Management System) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System). These systems will enable to set the foundation for any management system in general but will help a great deal with BCM. More specific to setting up BCM, the system has to be set as a top down approach as management buy in of this requirements is crucial for the success implementation of the requirements.
3) What available technologies can organizations leverage to enforce business continuity?,
Data recovery centers is one of the most important and widely available technology for BCM. New technologies like big data would help some organization depending on the scope of their activities.
4) How can organizations maintain a higher value on disaster preparedness, especially when budgets are tight?
Organizations have to realise that the investment put into BCM is a long term investment and it is an assurance system. With tight budgets these investments have to be spread over longer periods of time but also for each initiative taken in this direction, a clear cost benefit analysis should be conducted to ensure that the initiative is worth the investment. This of course involves conducting a proper risk assessment.
5) What role can local-level decision makers play in mitigating the impact of disasters?,
The recovery teams play a crucial role in minimizing the impacts of a disaster. The organizations applying BCM should ensure that the teams are set up to enable a fast response on the first level (local level- with sufficient tools and empowered decision making), but also with the knowledge and judgement of when to escalate to the next level so that further interventions can take place at a higher level as required.
