Was Malaysia a transit point for Chechen militants?
Find more information about Chechen militants in Thailand with Andrin Raj.
The News Straits Times recently reports that operatives of Chechen terrorist groups may have been using false travel documents, using Malaysia as a transit point to meet up with local operatives before moving to the Middle East.
Southeast Asia regional director for the International Association for Counter-terrorism, Andrin Raj, said, the group had been operating in Southern Thailand prior to the Sept 11, 2001 attacks in the United States where they were believed to have connections to the first bombings in 2000 in Thailand.
He added that the Chechens were believed to have been training Ulghur extremists for years in the Russian territory. The extremists would travel using the Southeast Asian passage to avoid Chinese authorities in making their way to the Middle East to join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
They may plan to exit Malaysia as soon as possible. The authorities are stepping up security in profiling identifications at the borders and checkpoints.

Does being “smart” jeopardise the security of infrastructure?
With raising urbanisation and the boost in technology, cities are trying to adapt and evolve into better, more efficient and more environmentally friendly places - Smart Cities. This means deeper technological integration, modernisation of the existing network as well as sophisticated data collection and utilisation. The Internet of Things will play a significant role here. And having said that, all this connectivity will enlarge the potential “attack surface” that these urban areas must protect and defend. The Digital Security of Smart Cities has become a critical initiative in all “smart-oriented” countries. And Saudi Arabia is one of them.
