The course will provide relevant insights into bioprocesses using cells in bioreactors. It will focus mainly on modern biopharmaceuticals that have a complex structure and cannot be made in bacteria or fungi. An emphasis will be given to upstream processing, i.e. from nucleic acid, protein sequence or virus seed to harvest of product enriched material from bioreactors. During the vaccine session, the present COVIDvaccine developments will be used as a thread to discuss various vaccine strategies. We will discuss how we got here and we will discuss the challenges involved in the manufacturing of the different types of vaccines.
