Akshaya Gaur has over 37 years experience in the Banking industry and has a track record of leadership in Banking Technology with a strong customer, business and delivery focus. He possesses in-depth expertise in a wide spectrum of traditional and emerging technologies in the Banking sector. These skills are underpinned by a strong strategic ability, business acumen & commercial skills. As an executing-strategist, Akshaya has a proven track record of delivering major transformation programs in international environments across the UK, Singapore, UAE, Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and India. As a leader of people, Akshaya has created and energised diverse individuals operating in multi-cultural environments into a management team focussed on a well-articulated strategy and delivering to specific objectives and accountabilities.
Akshaya is, currently, the Founder of Aayan, a consulting and advisory company in the FinTech, Digital Transformation and Banking Technology space. He has been a strategic advisor to an Indian IT Major in the Banking space and is on the advisory boards of start-ups that provide solutions in Data Analytics, Risk Management, UX, AI Machine Learning, Human Resources and Regulatory & Compliance areas. In addition, he has implemented and runs a strategic customer engagement process for a software company providing Banking solutions. Akshaya has a passion for people and uses his coaching and mentoring skills to grow start-ups and young professionals as leaders with the right values, culture and work ethics as a member of start-up ecosystems in India. Prior to this, Akshaya was the Chief Information Officer, Mashreq Bank, UAE & Chief Executive Officer of the subsidiary, Mindscape IT. He was a member of Mashreq Bank’s Executive Leadership Forum and a member of the Board of Directors of Mashreq Global Services, Mashreq’s fully-owned subsidiary in Bangalore, India.
As the CIO of Mashreq Bank, he managed a budget of more than AED300 million with a strong focus on customer & business alignment, innovation, transformation and cost management. Akshaya drove and delivered the transformation of Mashreq Technology to a business-aligned organisation, that is focussed and on cost (effected saves to manage flat costs between 2014 and 2015); stability (reduced incidents by 70%); and effected the delivery of 70+ major projects and 900 changes across the year). Akshaya also successfully delivered Mashreq Bank’s strategic agenda of creating a culture of innovation with a focus on Digital Transformation using mobility, cloud, big data, infrastructure and straight-through processing. Mashreq won more than 40 awards in 2014 for the innovative solutions brought to the market under his leadership.
Akshaya worked with Standard Chartered Bank in several leadership positions for 23 years. He was the Executive Vice-President responsible for the management of the entire Technology function for Standard Chartered Global Business Services (SCB’s fully-owned subsidiary - SCBGBS) in Chennai, India. He led a Management Team of senior Technology executives and 3000 staff to deliver banking technology solutions and services to Standard Chartered. Akshaya drove the transformation of SCBGBS Technology from a cost-arbitrage focused “captive” to a capability-arbitrage focused value enhancer. Drove a major change of organisational identity and organisation behaviour resulting in dramatic attrition reductions and high levels of engagement and performance. Akshaya was awarded the Asian CIO Leadership Award 2015 for continued commitment to excellence as well as the BMC SEMEA (Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa) Best Cloud Service Management Implementation Award 2015.
Akshaya is widely traveled, having worked in various cities in India as well as London, Nairobi, Jakarta, Singapore, Hongkong, Harrisburg, PA, Stamford, CT and Dubai. His wife is a retired HR professional and an avid Bridge player. His older daughter is the Co-Founder of showscore.com in New York City and the younger one works with KPMG consulting in London. Akshaya plays cricket (more enthusiasm than talent!) and is an Asian Cricket Conference Level 1 qualified Umpire. He is an ardent footballer and a committed Manchester United supporter for over 50 years!
