The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston was founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. ‘Ex solo ad Solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto ever since – helping people from all walks of life to make the most of their potentials is what UCLan’s all about. From state-of-the art facilities and world class teaching and support to help undergraduate students, to providing world leading Astrophysics researchers with opportunity to work with NASA and photograph the Sun, UCLan has it all. UCLan have developed a leading position in the United Kingdom and overseas with respect to the delivery of taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Fire Safety Engineering, Management and leadership studies. The fire programmes are delivered at the University of Central Lancashire at Preston campus and at various partner institutions, such as, International College of Engineering and Management, Oman and City University of Hong Kong. The UCLan Fire Team also offers Research Degree Programmes (MSc by Research, MPhil/PhD) within the Centre for Fire and Hazard Sciences and a range of short courses to fire industry, such as, Fire Investigation. UCLan has evolved over the years to become a world class institution, recognized with its inclusion in the 2010 QS World Rankings – the first Modern University in the UK to gain this status. The University has a global reach and in most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) all 16 of the subject areas we submitted were recognised as demonstrating elements of work- leading research. The curricula of the fire courses have been successfully designed and developed in effective collaboration with appropriate employers and professional bodies, such as, Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and Energy Institute (IE). Benefiting from extensive research funding, Fire and Safety Engineering at UCLan has an enviable reputation for the quality of its teaching and research activities. All Fire courses are underpinned by the Research Centre in Fire and Hazards and benefit from the dedicated fire laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.
