Professor Robert Thomas is a Consultant Oncologist at Bedford and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals, a professor of Biological and Exercise Science at Coventry University University and a Senior Clinical teacher at Cambridge University. He specialises in the management of patients with breast, bowel and prostate caners with chemotherapy, biological agents, hormones and radiotherapy therapies but has an academic interest in lifestyle medicine. He leads a research unit, which specialises in the evaluation of exercise, nutritional and natural bioactive plant therapies to support patients and reduce late toxicities after cancer. Recent randomised controlled trials have including the World’s largest evaluation of a polyphenol rich supplement – The Pomi-T trial. An evaluation of a bioactive plant balm to help reduce the severity of chemotherapy induced nail damage – The UK PolyBalm study.
He designed the UK’s first training programme and qualification in Exercise Cancer rehabilitation is author of the book “Lifestyle after Cancer”, editor of lifestyle advice and cancernet.co.uk and the blog.cancernet.co.uk. He is Patron of the Cambridge Cancer Help centre and Chair of the Macmillan exercise expert advisory committee. For these efforts he has been voted the Hospital Doctor Magazine “Doctor of the Year” and the British Oncology Association “Oncologist of the Year”.
