Carolyn Benton Aiman is Managing Counsel Americas for Shell Oil Company who handles and
oversees the legal support for Shell’s major capital projects in the Americas. In her role, she oversees a team of attorneys in the US, Canada and Brazil, charged with support for Shell’s major Project delivery. Her team is responsible for negotiating and providing the legal services required to support the front end development, construction and commissioning of Shell’s major projects, both on and offshore, brownfield and greenfield, including matters for Downstream, Deepwater, the Arctic and LNG. She negotiates and oversees the negotiations, provides legal advice and support on the. Prior to her current assignment, Carolyn worked in other areas of Shell Legal, including providing support to supply and distribution, commercial transactions, alternative energy, including biofuels, wind and hydrogen, as well as legal support for regulatory work.

Carolyn began her legal career as law clerk for the Honorable Ken Hoyt U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Texas in Houston. After clerking she returned to St. Louis, Missouri to work as a litigation associate at a large St. Louis law firm in the Commercial and Products Liability Group. She later returned to Texas to join a boutique litigation firm, where she continued working as a litigation and trial attorney, but with a focus on Commercial issues and Labor and Employment, including ER ISA. While there, Carolyn handled a number of class action lawsuits and claims. Four years after returning to Houston and at the invitation of a firm client, Carolyn began her in-house career as a regulatory attorney for the Texaco legal department. Two years later, Carolyn joined the Shell Legal’s Regulatory Group, but quickly transitioned to its Downstream team. Carolyn was born and raised in Harlingen, Texas and earned her undergraduate degree in Math from the University of Texas and her JD from the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia, Missouri, where she was an honor, Dean’s List student, Vice President of her Class, and a member and officer of the Moot Court board. She is married with two children and lives in Houston.
