M A Mannan, MP was born in Village Dungria of Dakhin Sunamgonj Upazillaof Sunamgonj District, Bangladesh in 1946. He received his early education from his village school and then obtained “O”-level from Pakistan Air Force school, in Sargodha. After obtaining graduation from Dhaka University, he joined the former Civil service of Pakistan cadre in 1974 and served in the government of Bangladesh in various positions, including Deputy Commissioner of Kishorgonj, Mymensing and Chittagong. He served as Joint Secretary (Political) in Ministry of Home Affairs, Director General in the Prime Minister’s Office and Director General of NGO Affairs Bureau. He also served as an additional secretary in Bangladesh Election Commission and in the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in Geneva as Economic Minister. While in government service, he was sent to University of Manchester, UK from which received a post Graduate Diploma in Development Economics. He retired from Government service in 2003 as Chairman, Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC). He joined Bangladesh Awami League in 2005 and, was returned as Member of Parliament on its ticket in 2008. In the 9th parliament (2009-2004) he served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts. Besides, he served as a member in the Parliamentary Standing Committees of Ministry of Public Administration, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Defense, in which he represented the Honorable Prime Minister. He was elected to the Central Executive Committee of Bangladesh Awami League as member in 2010 and 2013. Having returned second time as Member of Parliament in 2014 he was appointed in the new Cabinet of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as State Minister of Finance on 12 January 2014. In April 2014, he was given the additional responsibility of the State Minister in the Ministry of Planning. Mr. Mannan is married, his wife ZolekhaMannan is a teacher in a women’s college in Dhaka. His daughter Sara is a Doctor and lives in the U. S. A with her husband. His son Sadat is a Managing Director in the Barclay’s Capital (Bank) in the UK and lives in London. Mr. Mannan is interested in Development literature and spends his time working for the welfare of the rural people of Bangladesh.
