Professor Soontorn Boonyatikarn is one of the leading architects in building technology and has over 30 years of experience in this field. He has designed many innovative energy conservation buildings in Thailand. In the early years, he graduated from Chulalongkorn University in 1973 with a B. Arch. Architecture (With Honor) degree. In 1982, he earned the D. Arch. Architecture degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. At Michigan he joined the staff and taught there for 18 years in the area of building technology and environmental control. He was active in the field and became the president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Central Michigan Chapter. In 1989, the professor moved back to Thailand to assume the post of Professor of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University. Professor Soontorn worked on many notable projects. In Thailand, he worked on the Bio-solar Home, the Future House, the Energy Conserving Building in Honor of His Majesty the King, the Luangphor Khoon Parisutho Technical College Library, the Shinawatra University, the General Headquarters of the Armed Forces, and the Government Complex Commemorating His Majesty The King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary, 5th December, B.E. 2550 (2007), etc. All the mentioned works have received honors and awards. His work on the Government Complex is the coalescence of modern energy-conservation concepts: natural lighting, cold storage, thermal storage, indirect evaporative cooling, infill wall, environmental modification, etc. The design reduced energy consumption of air-conditioning by approximately 90%. For his projects abroad, he is most recognized for his architectural concept work of the Diamond Building, which received the Platinum Certificate Malaysia Green Building Index and the Singapore Green Mark, in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The professor has received numerous awards for his work, including the ASHRAE Energy Award (First Place) Central Michigan Chapter: Integration of HVAC Control and Lighting Redesign & Retrofit in 1986, the Thailand Best Researcher Award (Philosophy Architecture) in 2000, the ASHRAE Regional Technology Award for Shinawatra University in 2003, the ASHRAE Regional Technology Award for the Bio-solar Home in 2003, etc. He was the Thailand best Energy Conserving Person in 2004. Currently, Professor Soontorn Boonyatikarn is the Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, and the council Board Member of the Architect Council of Thailand.
