Gabriel Santos has been responsible of the fire safety strategy for Metro de Madrid in the last 15 years. He has held the position of Safety Manager of the Civil Protection Department since 1998. Previously he was Project Manager for Fire Protection. During this period of time, Mr. Santos has led the teams in charge of designing and implementing different Fire Protection Plans, including the introduction and implementation of Water Mist Extinction systems in the trains. Mr. Santos has published different books and papers related to Fire Safety in subways and tunnels. He is coordinator and professor for the Master in FSE – APICI and Universidad de Comillas. Mr. Santos is co-founder of Spain’s Fire Protection Engineer Association. He is member of the Spanish Fire Protection Engineers Association Partnership (APICI – Spanish Fire Protection Engineering Association), the National fire Protection Association, the NFPA’s section on Rail Transportation Systems, and the Latin-American Association (NFPA). He has also been a member of the Partnership of European Commission Framework Program of Thematic Network on Fire in Tunnels (FIT), and the Partnership of European Commission Advisory Board of Low-cost Sustainable Innovative “Upgrading of Existing Tunnels – UPTUN”. Mr. Santos holds a Degree in Architecture from “Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura. Madrid. España” and has completed an advanced studies diploma related to a doctoral degree from “Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales y de Telecomunicaciones”, Department of Transportation and Protective Technologies and Processes Technology, Santander, Spain.
