Pierre Schmitz is a civil engineer in electro-mechanics. He was a technical adviser in Morocco, Rwanda and Ivory Coast and then private consultant near the Government of Ivory Coast for energy matters, mainly for World Bank projects. In 1992 he was a civil servant in the Brussels Region administration of mobility where he was in charge of the traffic control centre and coordinator for the safety of the 25 road tunnels before becoming head of the “European and International relations Department” in charge of European R&D projects related to road tunnels safety and ITS. He was representing Belgium in the PIARC “Road Tunnel Operations” Technical Committee from 1996 to 2003, was the French secretary of this committee from 2004 to 2007, president from 2008 to 2011 and vice-president of this committee and leader of the Working Group “Knowledge management” in charge of the PIARC Road Tunnel Manual electronic encyclopaedia from 2012 to 2016. He is now retired but continues to work for the PIARC Technical Committee “Road Tunnel Operations” as PIARC Honorary Member.
