Rubin Japhta is the SME Banking Specialist and the Gender Finance Specialist for IFC in the East Asia and Pacific region. He is based in Jakarta, Indonesia and also supports agribusiness colleagues to find ways of increasing women’s participation in smallholder sourcing and support programs. Previously, Rubin acted as IFC’s head for financial markets advisory services in sub-Saharan Africa. He also acted as program manager for the Africa MSME Finance Program. This program assisted 9 out of 15 of its partner banks to develop financial products and services for women-owned SMEs. During his time in Africa he also served the Agribusiness Advisory Services Lead and coordinated an Access to Finance Performance-Based Grant Program for Africa and the Middle East. Prior to joining IFC he worked for an apex bank for 3 years as Manager of Operations, responsible for appraising and managing investments made to financial institutions for onlending to SMEs. He started his career working 6 years for the leading non-bank SME financial institution in South Africa, Business Partners. Rubin Japhta holds an MBA (cum laude) degree from the University of Stellenbosch, a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Development Economics and a Post-Graduate diploma in Education from the University of Cape Town.
