He was the Chief Minister of Malacca for three terms from 1999 to 2013. His career in public service sector began when he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Transport from 1995 to 1998 and later as the Deputy Minister of Health spanning from 1998 to 1999. Tan Sri Haji Ali is an active political figure who has been the member of UMNO Supreme Council since 1997. He also served as UMNO Vice President from 2004 -2009 apart from being the Chief of UMNO Division for Bukit Katil and Chairman of Malacca’s UMNO Liaison Body from 2000 to 2013. He graduated with a Master Degree in Arts from University of Malaya in 2013 and holds a Bachelor Degree in Social Science majoring in Economics Development from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1984. Tan Sri Haji Ali was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by several universities such as Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Multimedia (MMU), Universiti Sultan Kudrat and Universitas Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau, Indonesia. Currently, he sits on the board of Yayasan DMDI Finance House as Chairman and serves as President of Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI).
