Derek has worked for over 40 years in the fields of metallurgy, materials, welding engineering, manufacturing and technical auditing. In the Oil and Gas Sector he has a wide range of experience across many sectors of the industry and has worked with manufacturers, fabricators, engineering / design contractors, oilfield equipment manufacturers, and operators. Derek has also established, implemented, and managed technical qualified manufacturers systems particularly in the areas of duplex and super duplex materials, implementing the requirements of Norsok M-650 and ISO 17782. The most notable of these systems, for ExxonMobil, one of the largest independent oil and gas operators, along with that of Statoil, has become the industry benchmark.

Derek has presented to many companies across the industry primarily on this subject but also on the roles and responsibilities of the metallurgist on major oil and gas projects, and material selection within oil and
gas production systems. Derek has also acted as project metallurgist on a number of major oil and gas developments in the North Sea, the USA, and offshore West Africa. Clients Derek has worked for on such
projects include ExxonMobil, AMEC, WorleyParsons, Aker Solutions and TechnipFMC.

Derek has also worked with prominent stainless steel and Ni alloy manufacturers Sandvik Materials Technology, Sweden and Italfond, Italy, helping them to attain oil and gas industry approval to supply precipitation hardening Ni alloys (Alloys 718 and 925)

Since 2016 Derek has provided metallurgy, materials and welding engineering consultancy services via Cadence Engineering Services Ltd.
