Dr. Ing. Daniel Balos is specializing in Plant Performance Optimization, Asset Integrity, Maintenance Management, Risk-Based Inspection (RBI), Fitness for Service (FFS), and Damage Mechanisms for oil & gas and processing plants. In addition, he has extensive experience in Fire & Gas Systems (FGS) engineering, including detection technologies, system design review, mapping, and lifecycle performance optimization within high-hazard industrial environments. With a distinguished academic background, including a Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD focusing on the application of data mining techniques to model material behavior in high-temperature power plant components, Dr. Balos combines deep technical expertise with extensive hands-on experience in refining, power plant operations and maintenance.
With 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Balos has been at the forefront of refining, power plant performance optimization, asset integrity, and reliability management, specifically within the refining and power generation industry. He has successfully participated in and led numerous international assignments, focusing on improving plant efficiency, asset integrity management, fire & gas system effectiveness, and risk-based inspection for refineries, gas processing facilities, and power plants across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. His work has included the evaluation and enhancement of fire and gas detection strategies, integration with safety instrumented systems, and alignment with modern performance-based FGS design principles. His significant contributions include developing advanced methodologies and tools for assessing plant performance, optimizing maintenance strategies, improving detection coverage and reliability of FGS systems, and extending the operational life of critical plant equipment.
Dr. Balos has a proven track record in conducting comprehensive plant performance assessments, risk evaluations, and maintenance optimization, particularly for high-temperature equipment and critical plant assets. His experience includes pivotal roles in integrity and safety-related projects for leading global operators such as Eskom South Africa, KNPC Kuwait, QatarEnergy, SINOPEC China, and OMV Petrom Romania. His project experience includes active involvement in Fire & Gas system assessment, design review, and optimization in major gas and refining facilities including:
• QP Dukhan and Fahahil gas plant (Qatar, 2013), where FGS detection strategies and system effectiveness were evaluated in high-pressure gas environments.
• He contributed extensively to KNPC projects in Kuwait (2016–2022), including integration of FGS considerations within broader asset integrity and maintenance frameworks, with focus on detection coverage, reliability, and operational performance.
• For QatarEnergy, he supported asset integrity and safety-related activities at Mesaieed Industrial City and Dukhan fields, including evaluation of FGS performance, maintenance strategies, and lifecycle management of detection systems.
• Additional experience includes gas processing facilities in Serbia, where fire and gas detection concepts were reviewed in the context of plant safety and operational reliability, as well as refinery-related projects in multiple international locations involving assessment of detection systems and their integration with plant safety layers.
• He also contributed to EuropeAid programs in Serbia and Turkey (2013–2015), supporting industrial safety improvements including aspects of fire and gas detection, risk mitigation, and compliance with European safety expectations. Through these engagements, he has consistently improved plant reliability, reduced operational risks, strengthened fire and gas detection effectiveness, and enhanced overall plant safety and efficiency.
A certified professional in API 580 (RBI) and API 571 (Damage Mechanisms), Dr. Balos is also widely recognized for his extensive training and teaching contributions. Since 2005, he has delivered specialized courses on refineries, process plants, gas facilities, Fire & Gas Systems, power plant performance, RBI, asset integrity, and maintenance management in over 20 countries, significantly enhancing the technical knowledge and capabilities of industry professionals worldwide. His commitment to advancing industry standards is further demonstrated by his active involvement with professional bodies such as VDI and ASME and his ongoing contributions to international technical and safety platforms.
