Dr. Phil Hopkins is an independent consultant with more than 35 years’ experience in pipeline engineering. Phil formed his consultancy company in 2015, after being Technical Director with Penspen Ltd in the UK, and previously Managing Director of Andrew Palmer and Associates, in the UK. He had also previously spent 17 years working in the Research and Technology Division of British Gas, UK. He has worked with most of the major oil and gas companies and pipeline companies around the world, providing consultancy on management, business, design, maintenance, inspection, risk analysis and safety, and failure investigations.

Dr Hopkins has served on many national and international committees, including British Standards Institution, Institute of Gas Engineers committees, the European Pipeline Research Group (co-chairman), the European Gas Research Group, the DNV Pipeline Committee, and the American Gas Association’s Pipeline Research Committee. He is the past-chairman of the ASME Pipeline Systems Division, and is now a member of the ASME PSD Senate and a Fellow of ASME.

Dr Hopkins has extensive experience in lecturing, speeches and training. More than 25,000 15,000 engineers and technical personnel around the world have attended his courses. He is the author of over 100 technical and management papers and is the co-author of the book: ‘Pipeline Integrity Management Program and System – A practical approach’, published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (New York, USA) in 2016. He also teaches extensively (as a Visiting Professor) on masters’ programs at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities in the UK. He has been involved with research work for the past 35 years and has supervised higher degrees at the Universities of Salford, Cranfield, Oxford, and Cambridge.
