Before serving as BP’s Data Privacy Global Lead, Ellis spent over eight years as AstraZeneca’s Global Privacy Counsel responsible for day-to-day data protection compliance including operationalizing successfully the interplay between bioethics and data protection principles in clinical trials and AZ’s adherence to international transfer restrictions. Most recently Ellis was Data Ethics Adviser to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office, responsible for articulating the ICO’s policy on the role purely ethical considerations can play in operationalizing successfully the GDPR’s core principles, particularly in novel personal data processing operations involving artificial intelligence and machine learning. While at the ICO, Ellis was seconded to the NHSX’s Information Governance Team to advise on the data privacy implications of the NHS’s COVID-19 Contact and Trace App and Public Health England’s Test, Track and Trace programme. Ellis has also advised on the Dept. of Culture Media and Sport’s ideas for proposed legislative reform to the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 now the BREXIT Transition Period is over.
