Gerard I.J.M. Zwetsloot is independent researcher and consultant; earlier he was senior researcher at the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, TNO and honorary professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam (NL, 1998-2006) and Nottingham University (UK, 2007-2019).

He holds a BSc in chemistry and physics, an MSc in chemistry (University Utrecht) and a PhD in Social Sciences (Leiden University). His work focuses on innovative approaches for health and safety management and the relationship with business excellence, and/or corporate social responsibility. The last few years his work is mainly focused on Vision Zero, the development of safety leadership and a prevention culture.

He is the founding father of the Dutch Zero Accidents network, and is internationally regarded as a thought leader in Vision Zero. He has carried out safety culture assessment and improvement projects in several sectors, including chemical process and nuclear industry. He also did projects in this area for several authorities.

Gerard Zwetsloot is frequently involved in research and development projects for national and international bodies and in strategic consultancy for major companies. He is frequently invited as a (keynote) speaker for national and international conferences and has generated a wide range of publications.

In 2019 Gerard Zwetsloot received the Mukaidono Safety Award – a life time achievement award – from the Institute of Global Safety Promotion in Tokyo.
