Dr. Colella is Senior Associate at Exponent Inc. (USA) and principal member of NFPA 502 committee as well as of the NFPA1700 committee on Structural Fire Fighting. Dr. Colella specializes in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer modeling. He has broad experience in the use and development of numerical codes for simulating tunnel ventilation flows and fires, enclosure fire dynamics, atmospheric dense gas dispersion. Dr. Colella has published dozens of scientific papers and several book chapters on the subject of tunnel fire safety, fire modeling as well as fire safety electric vehicles. He is author of Flammable Vapor Cloud chapter in the 2015 edition of the SFPE handbook. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Colella was postdoctoral research assistant in the Energy Department at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and research assistant at the BRE Centre for fire safety engineering at the University of Edinburgh (UK). For his doctoral thesis, he developed a multiscale 1D-3D CFD technique to reduce the computational time for tunnel fire safety applications.
