Markus Koester currently holds a Director position at the department of Discovery Research Coordination which provides the discovery research organization at Boehringer Ingelheim with operations and strategy management support. The recently announced new R&D strategy of Boehringer Ingelheim has emphasized that open innovation plays an essential part in the discovery of new medicines. In this context Markus has established scientific crowdsourcing as a new open innovation tool to attract external new therapeutic concepts beyond Boehringer Ingelheim’s established academic network. Markus has broad experience in pharmaceutical drug development and innovation – both in research and commercial roles. Prior to his current role, as Council Chair for R&D Competitive Intelligence at Boehringer Ingelheim and as Head of Global Business Intelligence at Merck KGaA he has accumulated a wealth of experience in the fields of market research, forecasting and competitive intelligence. Markus is a Molecular Biologist by training and obtained his PhD title at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, in the area of Developmental Biology.
