Peter Cowup joined London Fire Brigade (LFB) in 1982 and very recently retired as an Assistant Commissioner, when he had responsibility for the development and maintenance of operational policy. His core role was to lead the department that is responsible for LFB’s operational policy and specifying training and equipment solutions associated with firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials, respiratory protective equipment and incident communications. Peter’s previous experience includes working as a frontline firefighter at a mixture of central London fire stations, specifying the operational requirement for a replacement mobilising (emergency call handling) system and being responsible for all aspects of fire service delivery in a busy inner London borough. During his career, Peter attended and took command roles at a wide range of significant emergency incidents. These include acting as tactical (Silver) commander at a major incident at Chancery Lane underground station and during the 7/7 London Bombings at Kings Cross station. More recently, Peter acted as LFB’s principal media spokesperson at the Vauxhall helicopter crash in 2013 and as Gold fire commander for the Kingsway fire at Holborn in 2014. Peter graduated from the University of Warwick with a BA (Hons) in 1981 and is married with a teenage son. Outside of LFB, Peter is chair of governors at a primary school and also acts as a trustee for the St Matthias Community Centre in Poplar, London E14.
