Richard Lock is a Mining Engineer who has had a varied career across many commodities over the last 28 years. Richard started his career working in South Africa gaining operational experience in both Diamond and Gold mining operations. Upon relocating to Canada, Richard worked from the late exploration phase through to production of the Diavik Diamond Project, over those 9 years he was able to see how a large project develops and is shaped as it progresses to full production. Following that was the CNRL Horizon project where the vast scale of an oil sands mega-project was tackled. This introduced the complexity of a multi-plant project with multiple contract strategies on the same site. Richard had accountability for the Bitumen Production area. The next challenge was with Rio Tinto’s Copper Projects Group, with direct responsibility for the Resolution Copper Project in Arizona. This early stage development project included the sinking of a 7000ft shaft in some very challenging conditions. After working for major mining companies, a move to the Junior mining sector was next with time spent at Western Potash. Now Richard is consulting for a number of clients including Yara International and Polymet Mining Corporation. Richard’s experience has always been on the owners side of project development and has seen projects developed through owner execution, EPCM, EPC and combinations of each. He has a history of successful project delivery, but has also seen his share of challenges and hopefully has learned from both.
