Embracing Tomorrow: Move towards renewable energy with us!

In an era where sustainability and environmental consciousness have taken center stage, the global energy landscape has undergone a significant transformation too. Businesses, individuals, and governments have recognized the urgency of transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy sources. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, the need for energy transition training has never been more needed.

We have teamed up with exceptional industry professionals to deliver various courses discussing these topics.

Matteo Loizzo | Fleming

Matteo Loizzo

Matteo Loizzo  provides a comprehensive introduction to the discipline of well integrity as it applies to geothermal wells. He will provide a complex understanding of how it can be achieved effectively and efficiently during the design and operational phases and after wells are abandoned.

The sessions are geared towards oil & gas professionals and companies transitioning to geothermal energy, who are encouraged to bring along some of their real-life challenges so they can be resolved with the techniques and methods discussed in class. The goal is to overcome the specific challenges of geothermal wells by leveraging what we have learned from oil & gas.

In another course, Matteo will talk about the integrity of wells exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2) in the context of Carbon Capture Utilization – for enhanced oil recovery – and Storage (CCUS). CO2 geological storage is a proven technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from sources such as coal power plants, cement kilns, and steel mills.

Wells are widely considered the most critical containment element, especially older wells that are not used to inject CO2 or monitor the plume evolution in the storage reservoir. The main reason for this perceived risk is the high corrosion rate of carbon steel when exposed to wet CO2, and the tendency of Portland cement to react with the gas.

Daniel Balos | Fleming

Daniel Balos

Dr. Daniel Balos will guide you through the challenges and opportunities in hydrogen production, transport, and storage technology. Hydrogen as an efficient energy carrier has been used as an energy source for decades and an important substance for i.e., hydrocracking processes in the petrochemical industry. Therefore, significant research has been performed to ensure that the production, transport, storage, and ultimate use are performed safely.

This course looks at the hydrogen technologies in the overall hydrogen life cycle from the point of its production through transportation and storage up to the point of consumption of the hydrogen, most notably as fuel for energy production. The course also provides an overview of contemporary used materials and governing standards for hydrogen usage and discusses in detail the damage mechanisms, specific challenges, and possible solutions for material application over the hydrogen lifecycle.

Giovanni Uguccioni | Fleming

Giovanni Uguccioni

Anna Chiara Uggenti | Fleming

Anna Chiara Uggenti

Two experts on safety, Giovanni Uguccioni and Anna Chiara Uggenti will share their knowledge about the essential elements of the activities related to process safety with applications on H2 plants. Particular attention will be given to their contextualization and integration with the management processes during the life cycle of plants. It includes presenting case studies of H2 plants and applying techniques to identify, evaluate and manage the risks.

The focus will be on:

  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA): reliability characterization of components and systems, application of HAZOP and FMEA techniques in life cycle stages.
  • Probabilistic and deterministic characterization of incidental sequences, identification, and characterization of barriers.
  • Application of Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA).
  • Application of Functional safety analysis (SIL studies).

Kevin Gray | Fleming

Kevin Gray

Another very important source of renewable energy is geothermal. Kevin Gray, with more than 30 years of experience, will introduce the key technologies and engineering strategies required to plan and execute a successful geothermal project. The course focuses on drilling technology, equipment, and principles used in successful geothermal wells. Specific attention is given to metallurgy and well control issues for geothermal wells.

Some of the to-be-discussed topics include:

  • Key technologies and engineering strategies required to design and execute successful geothermal projects
  • Metallurgy of geothermal wells and well control issues for geothermal wells
  • The interdependency between geothermal well drilling and the oil & gas business

Overall, the course provides a holistic perspective on geothermal drilling from the point of view of a geothermal developer.

Kevin also leads a course for those who need a compass to navigate the EU and national laws and regulations regarding geothermal energy. The course provides insight into the technological, legislative, economic, and social aspects of geothermal energy in the European Union. It covers a range of topics related to geothermal drilling regulations in Europe, including drilling techniques and technologies, environmental and social considerations, permitting and licensing, health and safety regulations, and financial and economic considerations.
